These cars operate on razor-thin margins, and any late alteration to aero deployment zones could render previous data useless and compromise performance or safety in other ways. They provided additional analysis demonstrating that the risks were overstated or manageable without such intervention.

Faced with the unified pushback, the FIA executed a dramatic U-turn within the hour. A statement confirmed: “Following the feedback received in the last hour from teams and drivers, and additional analysis contributed by teams, the decision to remove straight mode zone 4 for Albert Park is rescinded.” The zone was reinstated immediately for FP3 and the rest of the weekend. While the reversal averted a full-blown crisis, it left lingering resentment. Teams viewed the initial imposition as high-handed, especially given the massive investment and preparation required for the new regs.

The shift toward greater electric reliance and battery management has forced drivers to “drive conservatively” in races, saving energy rather than pushing flat out. Other rule tweaks added to the friction. The FIA adjusted the start procedure to include a five-second pre-start warning for turbo spooling, addressing delays seen in testing. A new rain hazard declaration rule allowed potential setup changes if heavy weather was forecast, though it remained unused in dry Melbourne conditions. Curfew restrictions were scrapped due to Middle East travel disruptions, and the pit lane speed limit dropped temporarily to 60 km/h to accommodate the 11th team, Cadillac, squeezing the lane.
