“I slammed the brakes… then the rear wheel locked.” — Max Verstappen on the bizarre issue that forced him out of Australian Grand Prix qualifying.

“I just slammed on the brakes… and then the rear wheel suddenly locked up.” That was the moment when Max Verstappen realized something had gone terribly wrong during qualifying at the Australian Grand Prix. The reigning Formula One champion later described the incident as one of the strangest mechanical reactions he had ever experienced in his entire career.

The shocking moment happened during Q1 when Verstappen approached Turn 1 at high speed. As he braked aggressively to prepare for the corner, the rear axle suddenly locked without warning. The loss of traction caused the car to spin violently across the gravel trap before crashing into the wall.

The impact instantly ended Verstappen’s qualifying session. Because the crash occurred before he was able to complete a clean lap, the Dutch driver failed to set an official time. Under Formula One regulations, that meant he would be forced to start from P20, the very last position on the grid.

For a driver used to dominating the front of the grid, starting from the back was an unfamiliar and frustrating scenario. Verstappen admitted afterward that the lock-up felt extremely unusual. According to him, the sudden rear-wheel lock had never happened in any race weekend throughout his professional career.

The incident also highlighted the unpredictable behavior of the new 2026 Formula One car regulations. Teams and drivers are still adjusting to the significantly revised power unit and aerodynamic concepts. Verstappen explained that the characteristics of the new car can sometimes feel strange and unpredictable under heavy braking situations.

Max Verstappen will have x-rays on his hands after his crash in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix.

Another factor, he admitted, was simple adaptation. The Red Bull driver is still learning the nuances of the latest machinery. Even for a three-time world champion, mastering a completely new generation of Formula One cars requires time, experimentation, and plenty of real track data.

Following the crash, Verstappen reported discomfort in his wrist due to the force of the impact with the wall. As a precaution, medical staff recommended an X-ray examination. Fortunately for Verstappen and his team, the results showed no serious injury and he was cleared to race normally the next day.

Despite the dramatic start to the weekend, the race itself would become a remarkable display of Verstappen’s resilience and racing ability. Starting from P20 at the back of the grid, many observers expected that recovering significant positions would be extremely difficult under the new technical rules.

However, Verstappen quickly began carving his way through the field once the lights went out. With aggressive overtakes and confident braking maneuvers, he steadily climbed through the pack. His pace was strong and consistent, allowing him to gain positions lap after lap.

The strategy executed by the Red Bull pit wall also played a crucial role in the comeback. Smart tire choices and well-timed pit stops helped Verstappen maintain momentum while other drivers struggled with tire degradation and energy management under the 2026 regulations.

By the halfway point of the race, Verstappen had already moved deep into the top ten. The Dutch driver continued pushing forward, overtaking several competitors with clinical precision. His performance reminded fans why he is widely regarded as one of the most aggressive and skilled racers on the grid.

In the closing stages, Verstappen managed to reach P6 — an extraordinary result considering he had started from the very last position. The comeback drive demonstrated both his raw speed and the strong overall pace of the Red Bull package during long race stints.

One of the most impressive moments came when Verstappen set the fastest lap of the race. Securing the DHL Fastest Lap not only showcased his pace but also earned him an additional bonus point. Even while fighting through traffic, his lap times remained among the best on track.

Max Verstappen 'not concerned' by deficit to Mercedes after Australia comeback drive

At the finish line, Verstappen crossed the line 54.617 seconds behind race winner George Russell. Although the gap looked large on paper, the context of the race told a more impressive story given his starting position and the time lost early in the race.

He finished just behind Lando Norris, who secured fifth place. The narrow difference between the two drivers suggested that Verstappen might have challenged for the top five — or even higher — if he had started closer to the front of the grid.

After the race, Verstappen openly shared mixed feelings about the new Formula One regulations introduced for the 2026 season. While he praised the team’s performance and the comeback result, he admitted that the racing experience itself did not feel particularly enjoyable.

The Dutch champion described the current cars as feeling somewhat unusual compared to previous generations. At one point, he jokingly compared the driving sensation to “Formula E on steroids,” referencing the heavy reliance on electrical energy and battery management during races.

One of his biggest frustrations was the way energy deployment affects race starts. Verstappen explained that battery drain can create moments where there is almost zero power off the line, making race starts unpredictable and sometimes frustrating for drivers trying to launch cleanly.

According to Verstappen, these characteristics reduce the natural flow of racing and make overtaking more complicated. He suggested that the heavy focus on energy recovery and deployment could take away some of the pure racing elements that drivers and fans traditionally love about Formula One.

The Red Bull star even hinted at growing fatigue with the direction of the sport if the issues remain unresolved. While he did not make any immediate announcements, his comments suggested that he hopes the sport will refine the rules to improve racing dynamics.

At one point, Verstappen admitted that drivers “can only take so much,” a statement that some fans interpreted as a subtle warning. If the regulations continue to limit driver enjoyment, it could influence how long certain stars remain in the championship.

Despite those concerns, Verstappen remained optimistic about Red Bull’s overall performance potential this season. He emphasized that the performance gap between Red Bull and Mercedes does not appear to be enormous, especially when analyzing race pace data.

With further setup tuning and improved understanding of the car, Verstappen believes the team can close the performance difference quickly. Early-season races are often about experimentation, and teams typically unlock more performance as they gather data.

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies was full of praise for Verstappen’s recovery drive. Speaking after the race, Mekies described the performance as “fantastic,” particularly considering the difficult position the team found itself in after the qualifying crash.

According to Mekies, climbing from last place to sixth in modern Formula One requires a combination of skill, patience, and strong race execution. Verstappen demonstrated all three qualities throughout the race weekend, turning what could have been a disaster into valuable championship points.

In total, Verstappen secured eight points for finishing sixth, plus the bonus point for fastest lap. While not the victory he might have hoped for, the result minimized the damage from the qualifying crash and kept him within reach in the early championship standings.

The strong performance of Mercedes early in the season, however, has not gone unnoticed. With Russell taking victory and showing impressive pace, it is clear that the battle for the 2026 championship may be far more competitive than in previous seasons.

As the Formula One calendar moves on to the next race, attention now turns to the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix. Verstappen will undoubtedly be eager for redemption after the chaotic weekend in Australia.

Starting from the back and finishing sixth proved that Verstappen and Red Bull remain a formidable combination even when things go wrong. But if qualifying goes smoothly in China, fans may once again see the Dutch champion fighting where he is most comfortable — at the very front of the grid.
