🚨 «THIS MATCH IS RIGGED — IT SHOULD BE INVESTIGED IMMEDIATELY!»

The 2026 Miami Open men’s final, played Sunday, March 29 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, was supposed to be a celebration of high-level tennis. On the one hand Jannik Sinner, the world number 2, fresh winner of Indian Wells and in search of the prestigious “Sunshine Double”. On the other Jiri Lehecka, the Czech number 21 seeded, in his first Masters 1000 final in his career. The forecast was clearly in favor of the Italian, but no one expected a scandal of these proportions.

The match started more than an hour and a half late due to the persistent rain typical of Florida in that period. After several postponements, Sinner and Lehecka finally took to the field shortly after 4.20pm local time. The first set was dominated by the Italian: Sinner won 6-4 in 46 minutes, without losing a single point on the first serve (16 out of 16). Everything seemed under control.

Then came the second rain interruption, this time for about 90 minutes. When the game resumed, Sinner continued to grind out the game and closed the second set with another 6-4, winning the title in just over an hour and a half of actual play. For Sinner, this is the second triumph in Miami (after 2024), the seventh Masters 1000 in his career and, above all, the completion of the Sunshine Double without losing a single set in the entire tournament – a historic feat, the first for a man since Roger Federer in 2017.

But for Jiri Lehecka, the defeat was much more bitter than expected. At the end of the match, the Czech did not hide his frustration. During the post-match press conference, Lehecka made serious accusations: «This match is rigged. He should be investigated immediately.” According to the 23-year-old from Bilovec, Sinner would have illegally exploited the rain interruptions to “reset” his mental and physical rhythm, presumably receiving external assistance or using “hidden equipment” (perhaps referring to non-regulatory data recovery or analysis devices).

The accusation spread within minutes on social networks and in the corridors of the stadium. Telegram, X (formerly Twitter) and Italian and Czech fan groups exploded. Many recalled that Lehecka, in the days preceding the final, had already commented in critical tones on the story of Sinner’s positive test for clostebol in 2024, underlining how the world number 2 had been able to afford high-level lawyers to manage the situation. That background further fueled the flames of controversy.

Immediately after Lehecka’s statements, tournament officials and ATP supervisors began an urgent review. Sinner’s racket, his bag, muscle recovery devices and even data from the sensors worn during the match were inspected. Members of Sinner’s coaching staff were briefly questioned. Meanwhile, fans and journalists gathered in front of the press room, creating an atmosphere of palpable tension.

After about 45 minutes of feverish waiting, the official verdict arrived:no irregularities detected. The tournament stated that all equipment and procedures followed by Sinner were fully compliant with ATP regulations. No “illegal technology” or violation of weather break rules was found. Rain interruptions were handled according to standard protocol, as has happened in hundreds of other matches in tennis history.

The decision has left the tennis world divided and in disbelief. On the one hand, Sinner’s supporters spoke of “unfounded accusations dictated by the frustration of a clear defeat”. On the other hand, a part of the tennis community – especially on social media – continued to have doubts, asking for greater transparency on recovery protocols during suspensions and on the use of high-tech devices (such as heart rate sensors, analysis apps or even alleged advanced “cooling devices”).

From a purely tennis point of view, Sinner offered a performance of the highest level. He served with great accuracy, dominated the baseline rally and made very few unforced errors. His ability to maintain focus despite interruptions impressed all observers. Lehecka, for his part, showed good tennis, especially with the laser forehand that took him to the final, but he struggled to cope with the intensity and depth of the Italian’s shots.

The Czech won only 8 games in total. It was one of the most one-sided finals in recent years in Miami. Yet, it is precisely this overwhelming superiority that has led some to seek “external” explanations. “It’s not possible for a player to be so constant, so cold even after hours of waiting in the rain,” Lehecka commented in a passage from the press conference that went around the web.

Reactions from the tennis world Jannik Sinner, as usual, kept a low profile. In the conference he said: «I just tried to stay focused and play my tennis. Rain is part of the game, especially here in Miami. I’m sorry that Jiri is angry, but I respected all the rules.” Sinner coach Darren Cahill called the accusations “ridiculous and disrespectful.” Among the players, Carlos Alcaraz commented ironically on social media: «Welcome to the club of accusations after losing to Jannik…». Novak Djokovic, however, preferred not to comment directly.

Former champion Andy Roddick tweeted: «Lehecka played a great week, but accusing her of cheating for rain breaks is a bit much. Let’s focus on tennis.”

In the meantime, on the forums and among bookmakers, bets on a possible “formal ATP investigation” have skyrocketed, even if most experts consider the matter destined to deflate quickly.

This “storm in a glass of water” (or rather, in the Miami rain) highlights some critical issues of contemporary tennis:

Increasingly frequent weather disruptions due to climate change make clearer rules on recovery times and permitted assistance necessary. The presence of technology (sensors, apps, cooling/heating devices) is becoming increasingly sophisticated, opening the debate on where innovation ends and illicit advantage begins. The psychological pressure on younger players when facing phenomena like Sinner can lead to strong emotional reactions.

For Jannik Sinner, despite the media fuss, there remains a week to remember: 12 consecutive victories in Miami, Sunshine Double completed, 34 sets won in a row in the Masters 1000. At 24 years old, the Italian continues to dictate the law on hard courts and enters the clay season with sky-high confidence.

For Jiri Lehecka, however, the bitterness of a badly lost final and accusations that risk damaging his image remains. The Czech has shown that he can compete at the highest level, but he will have to manage his emotions better if he wants to transform from a promising player into a stable top player.

At this time, the ATP has not announced any formal investigation. The affair seems destined to remain a controversial episode of an already historic final for other reasons. But in the hyper-connected world of tennis 2026, a sentence uttered in a press conference can still shake the entire sport.

Tennis isn’t just about winning shots and trophies. Sometimes it is also rain, accusations, waiting and disbelief. And yesterday in Miami, we got a perfect taste of it.
