“My son has brought pride to this home… and to all of Italy…” — the mother of Jannik Sinner couldn’t hold back her tears in an emotional moment, as she reflected on the boy he once was, now the world number one and the face of a historic chapter in Italian tennis.

Siglinde Sinner, sitting in the living room of her house in San Candido, could no longer hold back her tears. Images of his son Jannik lifting the trophy flashed before his eyesMonte Carlo Masters 2026, the first Masters 1000 clay title of his career. With her voice broken by emotion, the mother of the world number 1 whispered words that moved the whole of Italy:

«My son brought glory to this house… and to all of Italy…»

It was an intimate moment, captured by a camera that followed the Sinner family during the final. While Jannik, with the icy calm that distinguishes him, dominated Carlos Alcaraz in two sets (7-6(5), 6-3), his mother, away from the Principality of Monaco due to health problems, followed the match from home with her heart in her mouth. When the last point was played and her son became champion of Monte Carlo, Siglinde hid her face in her hands and cried. They were not tears of simple joy.

They were tears of a long journey, made up of enormous sacrifices, sleepless nights, doubts and fierce criticism that seemed to be able to overwhelm the entire family.

Jannik Sinner did not become the dominator of world tennis by chance. Behind every ace, every baseline winner and every title there is a story of sacrifices that very few really know. Born in 2001 in Innichen/San Candido, Alto Adige, Jannik spent his childhood among the snows of the Dolomites. As a child he excelled at skiing, a sport that already required great economic sacrifices for a modest family. His father Johann (Hanspeter) worked as a cook and his mother Siglinde as a waitress in a ski lodge.

Together they earned little, yet when Jannik, at 13, decided to abandon skiing to dedicate himself completely to tennis, his parents never put pressure on him. On the contrary, they supported him.

At 14, Jannik left the family home to move to the Piatti Academy in Bordighera, Liguria. He was still a kid. He had to learn to cook for himself, to do his own laundry, to deal with loneliness. For the parents it was a painful choice: leaving their teenage son far from home to pursue an expensive dream. “For me it was difficult, but for my parents leaving their son at 14 was not easy,” Jannik said several times with gratitude. The family had to make enormous financial sacrifices.

They sold part of the businesses, reduced expenses, worked even harder to pay for lessons, trips, rackets and training. Jannik himself, at a very young age, promised his parents: «If it costs too much, I’ll stop. We can’t afford it.”

Those years of extreme tiredness have left their mark. Siglinde has admitted several times that she is very nervous when she watches her son play. He often prefers not to be in the players’ box because the anxiety is too strong. During Jannik’s journey there were dark moments: injuries, painful defeats, and above all the doping scandal of 2024-2025 which put him under the media spotlight in a ruthless way. Fierce criticism, unfair accusations, threats. In those difficult days, the family became even closer. Siglinde publicly defended her son with the strength of a mother: «My son has never cheated.

He dedicated all his time to training to bring glory to his family and Italy.”

Just as he was mentally retracing that long journey after the victory in Monte Carlo, a detail that had never been fully revealed until now emerged and left everyone in silence. During a private conversation with his family, Jannik revealed that in his early years at the academy, when things went badly and results were slow in coming, he wrote secret letters to his parents. In those letters he promised that one day he would return everything: not only the money spent, but above all the time and worries he had caused them.

“I want to make you proud,” wrote the boy at the time.

Those letters, jealously preserved by Siglinde, are today the symbol of a mutual sacrifice. It wasn’t just Jannik who sacrificed himself on the field. The whole family was fighting with him.

The victory in Monte Carlo 2026 has a special flavor precisely for this reason. It wasn’t just another trophy. It was the first Masters on clay, the surface that once seemed least congenial to his powerful and linear game. Sinner dominated the tournament, losing just one set, beating very strong opponents and regaining the top of the ATP rankings after defeating Alcaraz in the final. A historic feat for Italian tennis, which had not seen a dominator of this level for decades.

While Jannik celebrated on the centerpiece of the Monte Carlo Country Club, ideally dedicating the triumph to his mother (“This victory is for her, who was unable to come due to health problems”), at home Siglinde was experiencing uncontainable emotion. “My son brought glory to this house… and to all of Italy,” he repeated through tears. Simple words but full of meaning. Because Jannik didn’t just win for himself. He won for a family that believed in him when no one knew him, for a country that today considers him a symbol of national pride.

Italian tennis is experiencing a golden moment thanks to Sinner. After years of waiting, Italy has found its champion capable of competing with the best in the world on every surface. But Jannik always remembers his humble roots. «My parents gave me a work ethic. They worked every day at a simple job and taught me that if you want to achieve something you have to work hard,” he often says. That mountain mentality, made of resilience and humility, is what sets him apart from others. He doesn’t exaggerate, he doesn’t complain, he doesn’t seek justifications. Play, work, win.

Behind the splendor of the titles – Australian Open, US Open, Monte Carlo and many Masters 1000 – there are days of extreme tiredness. There are silent tears from the mother who is unable to watch certain matches due to anxiety. There are criticisms that seemed to overwhelm him after the doping scandal, when many doubted him. Yet, those very trials forged him as an authentic champion. Jannik transformed pressure into fuel, loneliness into concentration, family sacrifices into motivation.

Today, at 24 years old, Sinner is much more than a tennis player. It is a symbol for young Italians: it shows that with talent, work and family support you can get anywhere. His foundation helps children through education and sports, giving back what he has received. And mother Siglinde, with her tears of pride after Monte Carlo, represents the beating heart of this story.

That detail never fully revealed – young Jannik’s secret letters – reveals the true essence of his triumph. It’s not just a sporting victory. It is the fruit of a collective sacrifice that very few can truly understand: parents who give up being close to their child, a boy who grows up too quickly, a family who believes against all odds.

While Italy celebrates its champion, Siglinde Sinner looks at the Monte Carlo trophy (which Jannik promised to take home as a gift) and smiles through tears. «My son brought glory to this house…». Words that are worth more than any title. Because Jannik Sinner’s true success is not measured only by rankings or cups, but by the love and sacrifices of a simple family that made an extraordinary dream possible.

The road is still long. Roland Garros, Wimbledon, other Slams. But whatever happens, Jannik will always carry with him that baggage of emotions, sacrifices and pride that made his story unique. And his mother, with a full heart, will continue to cry tears of joy, knowing that that child from the Dolomites has truly brought glory not only to their home, but to the entire heart of tennis in Italy.
