“I only dared to keep the throttle at a quarter…” — Jack Miller reveals the tire-wearing nightmare at the Thai Grand Prix as his Yamaha MotoGP Team V4 nearly loses all traction in brutal heat, leaving the Australian rider almost 50 seconds behind winner Marco Bezzecchi

“I only dared to keep the throttle at a quarter…” The words from Jack Miller perfectly capture the frustration and survival mindset he experienced during one of the most physically demanding races of the season at the Thai Grand Prix. Under the scorching conditions of Thailand, the Australian MotoGP rider found himself battling not only his rivals but also the brutal combination of extreme heat, relentless tire degradation, and a motorcycle that was quickly losing grip lap after lap.

From the very beginning of the race weekend, the conditions at the Thai circuit were widely described by riders as some of the most punishing on the MotoGP calendar. Track temperatures soared well above comfortable levels, turning tire management into a delicate balancing act. For Miller, the situation became increasingly critical as the race unfolded, especially when he found himself trying to keep pace with eventual race winner Marco Bezzecchi.

According to Miller, the early laps already hinted at trouble. While the Australian managed to stay competitive initially, the intense heat began to destroy the rear tire performance far earlier than expected. As the laps passed, grip levels dropped dramatically, forcing Miller to drastically change his riding style just to keep the bike on the track.

“I could feel it slipping almost everywhere,” Miller explained when reflecting on the race. “Every time I tried to push even a little bit harder, the rear tire would spin and slide. At one point I realized the safest thing to do was to keep the throttle at about a quarter and just try to survive until the end.”

That conservative approach might sound unusual in a championship where riders typically operate at the absolute limit of performance. However, under the conditions at the Thai Grand Prix, survival quickly became the priority. Miller described the sensation of riding the bike as if it were constantly on the edge of losing traction, especially when exiting corners where acceleration is normally crucial.

The Australian rider also revealed that following other bikes made the problem even worse. While chasing the leading group that included Marco Bezzecchi, the turbulent air and rising track temperatures seemed to accelerate the tire degradation. Every attempt to close the gap resulted in even more aggressive tire wear.

“At one stage I thought I might lose the rear completely,” Miller said. “You could feel the tire cooking underneath you. The heat was unbelievable, and the grip just kept disappearing.”

The result of those struggles was a growing time gap between Miller and the race leaders. Despite his best efforts to manage the situation carefully, the Australian eventually dropped nearly 50 seconds behind Bezzecchi by the time the checkered flag waved. For a rider known for his aggressive racing style and ability to fight at the front, such a gap was a difficult outcome to accept.

The race itself turned into a showcase performance for Marco Bezzecchi, who handled the conditions with remarkable consistency. While many riders struggled with overheating tires and fading grip, Bezzecchi managed to maintain a stable pace throughout the race, eventually securing a convincing victory at the Thai Grand Prix.

Miller, meanwhile, spent most of the second half of the race focusing on damage limitation. With the rear tire losing more performance each lap, pushing harder risked a crash that could have ended his race completely. In MotoGP, riders constantly weigh the balance between risk and reward, and on that day the risk simply became too great.

The Australian rider also highlighted how the characteristics of the Yamaha V4 machine made the situation even more challenging under those conditions. While the bike has shown promising speed in certain sessions, maintaining consistent grip in extreme heat proved to be one of its biggest weaknesses during the race.

Engineers from the Yamaha MotoGP Team are expected to analyze the race data carefully, particularly the tire temperature patterns and traction control performance. Understanding why the tire degradation became so severe could play a crucial role in improving the bike’s competitiveness in similar conditions later in the season.

For Miller personally, the experience served as a reminder of how unpredictable MotoGP racing can be. A weekend that begins with strong expectations can quickly transform into a battle for survival once the race conditions change.

Despite the disappointing result, the Australian remained philosophical after the race. “Sometimes you have weekends where everything works perfectly, and other times you’re just trying to make it to the finish,” he said. “This one was definitely about making it to the finish.”

Fans and analysts alike have noted that Miller’s candid explanation highlights one of the most fascinating aspects of MotoGP: the delicate relationship between rider skill, machine performance, and environmental conditions. Even the most talented riders in the world can be limited by factors such as tire wear, track temperature, and mechanical balance.

As the championship continues and teams prepare for the next round, the lessons from the Thai Grand Prix will likely remain fresh in the minds of both riders and engineers. For Miller, the priority will be finding ways to prevent a similar tire nightmare from happening again.

Because as his own words suggest, riding at only a quarter throttle in MotoGP is not how any racer wants to compete. Yet on that scorching day in Thailand, it was the only way Jack Miller could keep the bike upright and bring it home to the finish line while watching Marco Bezzecchi disappear into the distance.
