🚨 “HE’S A SHAME! HE’S FAKING CRAMPS TO STEAL THE GAME!” Medvedev exploded in anger and accused Sinner of deliberately exploiting medical timeout rules after the world No. 1 was given a long break for alleged cramps

The semi-final of the Italian Internationals became the scene of one of the heaviest scandals in world tennis in recent years. Daniil Medvedev completely lost control after the defeat against Jannik Sinner and made very serious accusations: according to the Russian, the world number 1 would have simulated cramps to obtain an illegal medical timeout, completely changing the inertia of the match at the very moment in which Medvedev was dominating.

The Russian didn’t just let off steam. A few hours after the end of the match, Medvedev published a long and very harsh statement on his social media profiles accompanied by video evidence with precise timestamps, announcing that he had submitted a formal complaint to the ATP and asking for an independent investigation into the referee’s actions. The message ends with a warning that shook the tennis world: “Today you all protected him. I will expose this corruption before the whole world.”

The moment that infuriated Medvedev

The match had reached the third set. Medvedev, after a difficult start, had taken over. He was playing aggressively, dominating baseline rallies and keeping Sinner under constant pressure. The Russian clearly had the psychological and physical advantage. Right at that moment, at the most beautiful moment, Jannik Sinner asked for a medical timeout due to cramps.

Daniil Medvedev exits the court after losing to Jannik Sinner in Rome.

According to the ATP regulations, cramps do not give the right to a real medical timeout, as they are considered a physical condition that cannot be treated with treatment during the match (unlike injuries or illnesses). Despite this, the referee granted the Italian champion a break of several minutes. Medvedev protested vigorously already on the pitch, shouting towards the referee’s chair: “He’s faking it! He’s doing it on purpose to steal the match!”

After the break, Sinner returned to the field visibly fresher, changed pace and turned the situation around, taking the victory and qualifying for the final. For Medvedev it was the final blow.

The furious post-match reaction

Immediately after the (visibly cold) handshake, Medvedev made explosive statements at a press conference:

“It’s not the first time this has happened. When someone is in difficulty, cramps suddenly come and magically the referee grants an 8-9 minute break. I was dominating, I had everything in hand. This break completely destroyed my rhythm. It’s ridiculous. Everyone knows that cramps don’t give you the right to medical treatment, yet today it was allowed.”

But it was on social media, a few hours later, that Medvedev delivered the final blow. He posted a long thread on X (formerly Twitter) with several videos:

The exact moment in which Sinner asks for a timeout The match clock showing the elapsed minutes A comparison with other similar situations that occurred in the past Images showing Sinner running without problems a few minutes after the “pause”

In the post, Medvedev writes verbatim:

“Today I didn’t lose against Sinner. I lost against the system. The referee showed shameful favoritism. I have filed an official complaint with the ATP and ask for an independent investigation. It’s no longer tennis, it’s theater. Today you all protected him. I will expose this corruption in front of the whole world.”

The post surpassed 12 million views in a few hours and divided the tennis world.

The ATP rules and the dangerous precedent

The tennis rules are very clear on this point. Article 29 of the Code of Conduct states that a player can only receive medical treatment for pre-existing conditions or sudden injuries. Cramps are explicitly excluded because they are considered a consequence of physical fatigue, not a treatable injury. Despite this, recent years have seen an increase in suspicious medical timeouts, especially in decisive moments of games.

Many former players and commentators have spoken out. Mats Wilander said: “If we allow this, then every time someone is losing they can fake a problem and take a break. Tennis loses credibility.”

Reactions from the tennis world

The controversy has inflamed the environment.

Novak Djokovic wrote an ambiguous story on Instagram with the writing “Rules are rules…” Rafael Nadal, interviewed on the sidelines of an event, commented: “I don’t want to accuse anyone, but we must protect the integrity of our sport”. Italian fans are divided: many defend Sinner by claiming that the cramps were real, while others admit that the break was too long. Bookmakers have recorded a surge in bets on the final, a sign that media attention is skyrocketing.

Sinner, for the moment, has not released official statements. His team made it known that “Jannik focuses only on the final and respects all the rules of the game.”

A case that goes beyond a single match

This episode risks becoming much bigger than just a losing semi-final. Medvedev decided to turn the defeat into a battle for the integrity of tennis. If the ATP were to open a serious investigation, a systemic problem with the management of medical timeouts that has been going on for years could emerge.

Many industry insiders argue that the “Big Three” era has left a dangerous legacy: the habit of giving generous breaks to the most popular champions. With the arrival of the new generation (Sinner, Alcaraz, Rune, etc.), these dynamics are creating increasingly evident tensions.

Medvedev, known for his outspoken and sometimes controversial character, is playing a dangerous game. On the one hand he risks being seen as a “bad loser”, on the other he could become the champion of those who ask for greater transparency and rigorous application of the rules.

What will happen now?

The ATP confirmed that it had received Medvedev’s formal complaint and announced that it would “carefully evaluate the situation”. In the meantime, the final in Rome will be played under the spotlight of media attention never seen before.

Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain: Italian and world tennis have a case before them that cannot be easily dismissed. The credibility of the sport hangs in the balance.

Daniil Medvedev has decided not to remain silent. And the world of tennis is shaking.
