Kimi is absolutely furious. He now sees the kind of sneaky tricks George can pull off. Next time, he should stick his neck out too and give George back. Aside from the first few laps, it was unfortunately a rather boring Sprint race.

The 2026 Canadian Grand Prix Sprint will be remembered not for its constant suspense, but for the explosive tension within the Mercedes team between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. At the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, George Russell took a controlled victory ahead of Lando Norris, while his teammate Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader, finished third after a controversial incident that left the Italian seething with rage.

This race, although short at just 23 laps, revealed the first serious cracks in the Mercedes pair’s dynamic this season, as both drivers battle for the world title.

By Friday’s Sprint Qualifying, Mercedes had locked out the front row with Russell on pole position ahead of Antonelli, separated by just 0.068 seconds. The Briton, looking for a rebound after more mixed performances in recent weeks, had perfectly met expectations. Kimi Antonelli, who arrives in Montreal with a 20-point lead in the championship, had dominated the FP1 free practice session, but Russell had raised his level at the crucial moment. Behind them, Lando Norris placed his McLaren in third position, closely followed by Oscar Piastri, Lewis Hamilton on Ferrari and Charles Leclerc.

Max Verstappen, often dominating, had to be content with seventh place on the grid, a sign that Red Bull was still struggling to find the perfect balance on this fast and technical semi-permanent track.

The start of the Sprint was relatively clean despite the stakes. Russell started perfectly from pole and immediately took control of the race. Antonelli, who started second, tried to stay in the tailpipes of his teammate, but the Briton knew how to manage his Soft tires intelligently on this circuit where degradation is often rapid. The first laps offered a great internal duel at Mercedes, with the two drivers pushing each other to their limits. Kimi Antonelli, known for his aggression and pure speed, looked for the slightest opening to pass.

However, it was during an attempt to overtake that the situation degenerated.

In a fast turn, Antonelli went to the inside of Russell. The contact was light but sufficient to destabilize the Italian’s Mercedes, which went wide and lost several positions. On the radio waves, Kimi’s frustration exploded: he clearly accused his teammate of having tightened the trajectory in an aggressive manner, almost illegal according to him. Toto Wolff, the team boss, had to intervene to calm the young driver, asking him to concentrate on his driving rather than on the radio complaints.

This incident allowed Lando Norris to move up and settle firmly in second position, taking advantage of the chaos at Mercedes to consolidate his place.

After this event, the race lost much of its intensity. Russell opened up a comfortable gap in the lead, perfectly managing his lead over Norris who, despite a fast McLaren, was never really able to threaten the leader. Antonelli, after his off-track excursion, had to fight to get back on the podium. He finally finished third, but his heart was no longer in it. Upon arrival, the Italian did not hide his anger, declaring that if this was how the team should run, he had understood the message.

Russell, for his part, defended his move, saying he had only defended his position in a firm but correct manner. This internal tension at Mercedes adds a layer of drama to an already exciting championship, where Antonelli leads but where Russell shows that he remains a formidable opponent.

Beyond the incident between the two Mercedes, the Canadian Sprint confirmed several trends of the 2026 season. Mercedes seems to have the most complete car on this type of circuit, with excellent aerodynamic balance and superior tire management. The updates made by the German team have clearly paid off, putting both cars in dominant positions. McLaren, with Norris and Piastri, remains the main rival, capable of exceptional performance but still a little behind in terms of consistency over a short distance like the Sprint.

Ferrari, with Hamilton and Leclerc, have shown flashes of speed but still suffer from problems with rear tire degradation, a recurring problem this year.

Red Bull and Verstappen have had a complicated weekend so far. The Dutchman, reigning champion, had to deal with a less competitive car in the slow corners of Montreal. His teammate Isack Hadjar didn’t shine either. Aston Martin, Alpine and the other mid-grid teams mostly struggled for minor points, with Fernando Alonso eliminated early in qualifying after a crash. The Canadian Lance Stroll, in front of his audience, failed to shine, finishing far from the points.

This Sprint, although described as boring after the first laps by many observers, is of major strategic importance. The points awarded (8 for the winner, 7 for second, etc.) allowed Russell to eat into Antonelli’s lead in the championship. With a victory and a third place, Mercedes achieved an excellent double which strengthens its position in the constructors’ standings. For Kimi Antonelli, this result is a small disappointment which could nevertheless serve as motivation for the main race on Sunday.

The young Italian, often compared to a new generation of ruthless talents, will have to channel his frustration to bounce back.

Post-race technical analyzes highlighted the importance of tire choice and Sprint strategy. On the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, 4.361 km long with its long straights and technical turns bordered by walls, the slightest mistake costs money. Russell excelled in managing wear and tear, while Antonelli, more aggressive, paid the price for his audacity. Mercedes engineers will certainly spend the night dissecting the data to avoid any further internal conflicts before Grand Prix qualifying.

This weekend in Montreal also recalls the rich history of the Canadian Grand Prix, the scene of legendary battles between drivers. From Senna to Schumacher, via Hamilton, the circuit has always rewarded the daring while punishing the reckless. The Russell-Antonelli incident is part of this tradition of fratricidal duels which have marked the history of Formula 1. We think in particular of the past tensions at Mercedes between Hamilton and Rosberg, which had animated an entire era.

For fans, this Sprint offered a contrasting mix: a promising start with an internal battle at Mercedes, followed by more conservative race management. But it is precisely this frustration of Kimi Antonelli which fuels the discussions. The Italian driver, at only 19 years old, is already demonstrating a maturity and ambition that could propel him to the title this year. His virulent reaction shows that he does not easily accept defeat, especially against his teammate. Russell, experienced and calculating, knows perfectly how to destabilize his young rival.

Looking towards the main race, everything remains open. Saturday’s qualifying will determine the starting grid for Sunday, and Mercedes starts with a psychological and technical advantage. Antonelli will surely want to take his revenge, while Russell will look to confirm his status as leader of the weekend. Norris and McLaren are watching for the slightest opportunity to interfere in the fight. Verstappen, for his part, hopes for a strong comeback with optimized settings.

This 2026 Canada Sprint perfectly illustrates the evolution of modern Formula 1: faster cars, intense duels and crucial psychological management within the teams. The incident between Kimi and George may be just the start of a rivalry that could define the season. F1 fans are now impatiently awaiting the rest of the events on this legendary circuit bordered by the St. Lawrence River.

The overall performance of the teams also reveals lessons on the 2026 regulations. The single-seaters, with their new active aerodynamics and their more efficient hybrid engines, offer a varied spectacle. Mercedes excels in precision, McLaren in top speed, Ferrari in winding sectors. This mix creates an extremely competitive grid, where every point counts double in the fight for the championship.

At the conclusion of this Sprint, even if the race lacked twists and turns after the first laps, human emotion took over thanks to the fury of Kimi Antonelli. The latter discovered a tougher side of George Russell, a driver capable of anything to win. The next confrontation promises to be explosive, and Formula 1 fans will be the big beneficiaries. The Canadian Grand Prix continues to deliver on all its promises of drama and passion.
